The Position

We are seeking an experienced Gut Microbiologist to play a leading role in steering and expanding our microbiology capability within the Nutrition & Health Program.

In this exciting role, you will join a large research program working to improve the gut health of Australians. The team has expertise in working across the food value chain and developing nutritional solutions for health benefits.  Successful applicants will have the opportunity to work with other stakeholders to identify new and innovative research opportunities that will deliver socioeconomic impact.

Your duties will include:

• Overseeing the initiation, coordination and/or management of research projects and initiatives exploring host-microbiome interactions.
• Identifying new research opportunities to investigate the impact of various factors on the gut microbiome, and translate the findings into practical outcomes.
• Leading the development and application of powerful cutting-edge microbiological technologies to steer and expand the current capability.
• Assisting with the design and coordination of preclinical and human clinical trials.
• Working with internal and external stakeholders to identify new research opportunities, negotiate resources and secure research funding.
• Drafting and/or presenting research proposals and technical reports to stakeholders.
• Producing high-quality scientific papers suitable for publication in quality journals and for presentation at national and international conferences.

Salary:              AU $111k to AU $130k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful, you will need:

• A PhD (or equivalent research experience) in a discipline area such as human gut microbiology, applied microbiology, clinical microbiology, microbial ecology or molecular biology; plus significant relevant research experience.
• Significant record of quality publications as a corresponding or senior author in high impact, peer-reviewed journals, or as an inventor on patents, or as the leading author of industry reports.
• Conceptual and practical knowledge of the human gut microbiome and role of diet and other lifestyle factors in modulating gut microbial populations.
• Experience in the application of advanced molecular techniques and statistical, modelling, visualisation and/or computational tools to characterise the composition and metabolic characteristics of microbial communities in the gastrointestinal tract.
• To be able to select and apply microbiological technologies using sound judgements to achieve successful outcomes. 
• The capacity to secure funding, manage simple and complex projects and translate research findings into practical outcomes.
