Research Projects Officer - Aquaculture

CSIRO Agriculture and Food is seeking a motivated Research Projects Officer – Aquaculture. In this role, you will assist in facility design (including all aspects of biosecurity), system design and operations, animal breeding, rearing and maintenance, and commercial scale live feed production.

You will also undertake a wide range of operational aspects of both seawater and freshwater experimental systems including system monitoring and control, animal rearing, risk identification, problem solving and management of complex data sets. 

Your duties will include:

  • Management of commercial scale live feed production, including algae, artemia, rotifers and copepods.
  • Playing a key role in facility design and construction.
  • Management of seawater systems and animal stocks.
  • Playing a lead role in animal rearing and designing and performing live animal experiments
  • Managing automated monitoring and feeding systems.
  • Undertaking site visits and field work in remote areas of Northern Australia.  

Location: Bribie Island, Queensland
Salary: AU$85k - AU$96k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • A relevant bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant work experience in Aquatic Animal Biology with a focus on Aquaculture.
  • Extensive commercial aquaculture experience, preferably in hatchery operations
  • Proven experience in the management of commercial scale live feed production (algae, artemia, rotifers, copepods).
  • Proven experience in facility design and construction and a sound understanding of biosecurity principals.
  • Sound knowledge of reproductive biology of major Aquaculture species. 
  • Experience in microscopy and microbiology. 
  • Experience in the husbandry of aquatic animals for research or production, coupled with the ability to use automated systems to monitor and maintain aquatic animals. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and experience using Microsoft Office suite and specialist software for the collection, analysis and interpretation of data. 
  • The ability and willingness to contribute novel ideas and approaches in support of scientific investigations.
  • A current driver's licence.
  • To be willing and able to participate in site visits and field work of up to two weeks to remote areas of Northern Australia and to travel domestically and internationally as required.
