The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) is Australia’s tropical marine research agency.
Our research into some of Australia’s iconic marine ecosystems guides their management and that of similar systems around the world. About this Opportunity
The Principal Research Scientist will play a significant scientific leadership role in our Healthy and Resilient Great Barrier Reef program. The program is responsible for conducting interdisciplinary research to provide managers and policymakers with a better understanding of the Reef’s vulnerability to climate change and ocean acidification, and its interactions with local and regional environmental stressors.

Using the professional leadership and project management capabilities that you have gained through your PhD studies in a relevant discipline, along with your substantial postdoctoral experience working with coral reef biology or reef ecology you will initiate, coordinate and conduct nationally and internationally recognised coral reef research. Your extensive experience in conducting and leading marine ecological field work will be fundamental for driving multi-disciplinary team outcomes that are focused on building a strong foundation for the development of innovative ecological observation technologies that will support decision making in a complex, dynamic and changing environment.

About You
Reflecting on your PhD outcome (in a relevant discipline) and extensive postdoctoral experience in coral reef biology or reef ecology you will have the ability to demonstrate your:
• Advanced understanding of environmental issues facing coral reef ecosystems globally and regionally;
• Personal attributes of a team player with strong self-awareness, and interpersonal skills and the ability to foster an atmosphere of innovation, collaboration, creativity and excellence among others;
• Extensive experience in conducting and leading marine ecological field work; and
• Demonstrated ability and motivation to engage, communicate, build relationships and foster partnerships with a diverse range of stakeholders from government, industry, academia and the public.
