Background
On 16 September 2021, Prime Minister Morrison announced an historic advance in Australia’s strategic ties with the United Kingdom and the United States. This enhanced trilateral security partnership, known as AUKUS, will deepen collaboration on a range of security and defence capabilities.
The first major initiative under AUKUS will be Australia’s acquisition of a nuclear-powered submarine fleet, for operation by the Royal Australian Navy. A Nuclear Powered Submarine Task Force, led by Vice Admiral Jonathan Mead AO, will work with our United States and United Kingdom partners over the next 18 months to identify the optimal submarine pathway.
The Task Force will need to examine the requirements that underpin this optimal submarine pathway, including: nuclear stewardship, safety, security, capability, program management, industrial base, non-proliferation, disposal, regulation, environmental protection, training facilities, basing, workforce, and force structure.
Roles and Responsibilities
Defence requires exceptional senior executives to drive forward this program of new technology and deliver the Government’s intent.
We are seeking to fill a number of roles at the SES Band 1 and 2 level to support this work. There are a range of responsibilities across these roles. Candidates are invited to consider their credentials against some or all of these areas of responsibility:
- engagement with Defence Industry, including exploring opportunities for Australian Industry participation;
- providing policy, strategic planning advice, and advice on the capability;
- international engagement;
- development of the plan to acquire Defence materiel equipment (including nuclear propulsion technology);
- exercising stewardship of nuclear propulsion technology;
- exercising security of nuclear propulsion technology and those elements supporting this technology, including: personal, physical infrastructure, ICT and cyber;
- program management of nuclear propulsion technology;
- expert knowledge of nuclear reactors and/or propulsion technology, and
- program management of workforce, finance and resource risks to deliver required outcomes.
Relevant experience in the broader shipbuilding domain is also being sought.

As part of this selection process, a merit pool will be established and used to fill current and expected vacancies over the next 12 months.
The remuneration package includes superannuation, an Executive Vehicle Allowance and, where applicable, relocation expenses. The salary component for this position may be negotiated with the successful candidate.
Engagement may be negotiated on an ongoing basis or for a specified term. To be eligible for engagement, an applicant must be an Australian citizen. This is a security-designated position. The successful applicant will be required to hold or obtain a Positive Vetting security clearance
