The federal agriculture department is considering a $78 million office move.

The Agriculture Department told a parliamentary committee in a submission this week that it wants to move public servants working in the department's offices on Marcus Clarke Street and London Circuit in Civic, and Mort Street in Braddon, to a planned new building on the corner of Northbourne Avenue and Cooyong Street.

Property developer Amalgamated Property Group has development approval from the ACT Government to build on the Northbourne Avenue site, which it bought from Walker Corporation for $34 million in 2016.

The department says it would share the $78 million cost of office fitouts needed at the new building with Amalgamated Property Group.

The new building, named ‘Civic Quarter 2’, would allow the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment to fit 2,750 staff in a 32,700 square metre office space on a 15-year lease.

The department said it looked at regional centres or new office space, but could not find enough available space.

The CQ2 building is intended to stand alongside the newly-constructed Civic Quarter 1 building, fronting Veterans Park in the city centre.

Under the plan detailed this week, Agriculture Department staff would move into CQ2 shortly after its scheduled construction finish date in July 2022.
