Billions of dollars worth of investment stands to be unlocked in South Australia’s Spencer Gulf following the announcement of a Federal, State and Local government collaboration.

Federal Minister for Regional Development, Simon Crean, was joined by his State counterpart, Gail Gago, and Local Government Association of South Australia President Kym McHugh in announcing the new action plan.

“The Upper Spencer Gulf is on the cusp of unprecedented levels of private investment in mining, minerals processing, renewable energy and associated services, with 24 projects worth more than $36 billion expected to rollout in the next decade,”Mr Crean said.

“The action plan agreed to today will focus on unlocking this investment and diversifying the region’s economy.

“This is a shared vision that will harness the potential of the region’s mining services and renewable energy sectors, improve market access and deliver sustainable communities by leveraging investment.”

The action plan has identified four major projects so far, including:

  • Port Pirie City Centre Regeneration
  • Whyalla Airport Upgrade
  • Port Augusta Airport Upgrade

Mayor Kym McHugh said the flow-on effects of the landmark strategy would see communities in the region thrive and grow.

“This is an opportunity that will serve the Upper Spencer Gulf for decades to come, ensuring jobs and investment in social infrastructure that will put us on the map.”
