The Position

The Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF) at CSIRO has an opportunity for a highly motivated and enthusiastic electronics technician to join Australia's premier radio astronomy research organisation.
Combine the advantages of a rural lifestyle with a role presenting unique challenges at a prime science and technology research facility. You will work in a small team to plan and carry out technical maintenance, operations and upgrades of observatory instrumentation.

Specifically you will:

  • Optimally maintain the electronics instrumentation of the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), taking into account operational and financial constraints.
  • Undertake fault diagnosis and maintenance of broad electronic equipment.
  • Attend to afterhours breakdowns and work flexible hours if required and occasionally travel to other sites to work for a few days to assist with installation and maintenance of electronic systems.
  • Other duties as directed.

Additional responsibilities for CSOF4 Appointment:

  • Electronic or Radio Frequency (RF) equipment fault diagnosis and maintenance.
  • Meet agreed goals independently.

Salary:                 CSOF3 AU $61K - $78K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

                             CSOF4 AU $80K - $91K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful you will need:

Essential Criteria for CSOF3 and CSOF4 Appointment:

  • A TAFE Certificate, Associate Diploma or equivalent in Electrical / Electronics Engineering with substantial components in both analogue and digital electronics, from a recognised technical college or tertiary education institution and/or relevant work experience. 
  • Valid Class ‘C’ driver’s licence. 
  • Ability to work and access heights 50m above the ground
  • Basic understanding of analogue and digital circuits.
  • Demonstrated skills in fault finding, repair and service of both digital and analogue electronics equipment.  Attention to detail is key.
  • Excellent practical skills including soldering, the assembly of PCBs and electronic modules and the use of hand tools.
  • Ability to work effectively within, and positively contribute to, a small team of technical staff and to work with minimal supervision as required.

Additional Essential Criteria for CSOF4 Appointment:

  • Demonstrated systematic approach to fault finding and diagnostics to solve unique problems for a wide variety of systems.
  • Significant experience with Radio Frequency (RF) equipment support including the use of RF test equipment (such as network and spectrum analysers).
  • Extensive electronic service and repair experience.
  • Experience with computer aided drafting (CAD), mechanical, cryogenic or vacuum equipment support will be highly regarded.
