Experimental Scientist - Bioassay Development

  • Apply your skills in bioassay design and development.
  • Help inform Australia's response to biological threats to animal health.
  • Join the Bioassay R&D team at CSIRO's Australian Animal Health Laboratory.

The Position

We are offering an outstanding opportunity for an experienced Experimental Scientist to join the Bioassay Research and Development (Bioassay R&D) team at the Australian Animal Health Laboratory (AAHL).  This world-leading team is responsible for producing novel assays and bioreagents for the detection of pathogens, and for maintaining reagents that are used in approved diagnostic tests for infectious diseases.  Bioassay R&D outputs facilitate AAHL’s diagnostic and surveillance programs in Australia and abroad; enable research into emergency animal diseases (EAD); and have a view towards commercialisation. These broad activities fulfil diagnostic and surveillance roles that inform Australia’s response to biological threats to animal health and associated industries. This important role forms an integral part of the Diagnosis, Surveillance and Response program’s mandate.

Reporting directly to the Team Leader, you will be part of a small team working closely together across a broad remit that covers the use of molecular, protein and antibody systems to develop assays suitable for diagnosis of bacterial and viral pathogens.  Primarily you will support our ongoing diagnostic assay and reagent development efforts.  You will also will work closely with individual team members where cross-training is required, or where member’s skills are complementary to the task being undertaken.

NOTE:  To be appointable to this role you must be able to meet AAHL’s Microbiological Security and Security Clearance requirements

More specifically you will:

  • Devise, plan and execute experiments and procedures aimed at production of reagents and assays suitable for use as diagnostic tests.
  • Create effective strategies for recombinant protein-based test development - from gene design to protein expression and protein purification to prototype diagnostic assay assessment.
  • Deliver quality reagents and tests to internal and external collaborators in a timely manner within budget.

Location:      Geelong, Victoria, Australia

To be successful you will need:

  • A relevant degree with Honours or higher, or equivalent experience in biosciences or biotechnology.
  • A number of years of relevant experience in bioassay design and development.
  • Demonstrated experience expressing recombinant proteins in a range of host cell systems e.g. bacterial, insect or mammalian systems;
  • Demonstrated experience in molecular biological techniques including PCR, primer design, synthetic gene design, subcloning, and transfection/transformation of cells;
  • Competence in aseptic cell culture techniques e.g. mammalian cell lines or hybridomas;
  • Demonstrated experience in protein purification (e.g. affinity chromatography) and analysis (e.g. SDS PAGE and immunoblotting);

Other special requirements:

  • Must be willing and able to adhere to CSIRO AAHL microbiological security requirements and HSE policies as specified in the position description document.
  • Must be able to meet AAHL’s Microbiological Security and Security Clearance requirements.
