Postdoctoral Fellow in Robotics

  • Are you a highly motivated recent (or near) PhD graduate with an interest in robotics?
  • Prestigious Postdoctoral Fellowship on offer - kick-start your research career
  • Join CSIRO's Data61 - Australia's largest data innovation group

Do you want to work for one of the world's leading research organisations, live in a city with extremely high standard of living, enjoy pristine beaches and sun all year round, and still carry out ground breaking research? If so, please read on.

The Position

Postdoctoral Fellowships at CSIRO provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years relevant postdoctoral work experience.  These fellowships will help launch their careers, provide experience that will enhance their career prospects, and facilitate the recruitment and development of potential leaders for CSIRO.

Postdoctoral Fellows are appointed for up to three years or part time equivalent and will work closely with a leading Research Scientist or Engineer in their respective field. They carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO with the possibility of novel and important scientific outcomes. They present the findings in appropriate publications and at conferences.

The role of the Postdoctoral Fellow in CSIRO is to conduct innovative research leading to scientific achievements that are aligned with CSIRO's strategies. You may be engaged in scientific activity ranging from fundamental research to the investigation of specific industry or community problems.

You will have the opportunity to build and maintain networks, assist in securing project funds, provide scientific leadership and pursue new ideas and approaches that create new concepts.

The Robotics and Autonomous Systems Group at CSIRO develops systems for perceiving the environment, for use in mapping, navigation and interpretation. We are looking for a researcher to help build on the existing expertise and develop new algorithms for new devices in order to enhance the perceptive ability of autonomous systems.

In particular, you will have expertise in planning and control algorithms for field robotics, using data from laser range-finders (lidar) or camera devices. The types of robots range from wheeled to legged platforms. You should be comfortable working with real platforms outdoors and obtaining results beyond simulation. You should also be familiar with concepts of system integration, combining hardware and software for robust solutions outdoors. This is an exciting opportunity which requires a high level of competence in mathematics, particularly 3D geometry, linear algebra, optimisers and mechanics. Additionally, you will require competence in C++ software engineering and Python is desired.
