CSIRO Postdoctoral Fellowship in Porous Bio-materials for Emerging Technologies

  • An outstanding opportunity to launch your research career at CSIRO?
  • Have, or about to obtain, a PhD in chemistry, bio-chemistry, chemical engineering or materials science/engineering?
  • Join the CSIRO Manufacturing team for this exciting postdoctoral fellowship

The Position:

Postdoctoral Fellows are appointed for up to three years and will work closely with a leading Research Scientist or Engineer in their respective field. They carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO with the possibility of novel and important scientific outcomes. They present the findings in appropriate publications and at conferences.

CSIRO Manufacturing is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to work on CSIRO’s patented bio-encapsulation technology to develop new devices. The encapsulation technology is based on Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs). These porous materials are useful for a host of applications including molecular separations, storage and interactions. The project goal is to build on the fundamental understanding of porous biomineralisation and realise the potential for application with enzymes, cells and other bio-macromolecules. This will result in high impact publications, patents, and industry collaboration.

Your duties will include:

  • Designing, creating and testing encapsulated bio-macromolecules with new porous materials.
  • Undertaking well designed characterisation experiments and biological assays to determine the efficacy of the materials developed.
  • Designing and building bench-scale prototypes based on the new materials, and considering a range of potential opportunities for further development of the concept.
  • Undertaking regular reviews of relevant literature and patents
  • Producing high quality scientific and/or engineering papers suitable for publication in quality journals, for client reports and granting of patents.

Location: Clayton and Geelong, Victoria
Salary: $80k to $91k plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure: Specified term of up to 3 years
Ref no: 57092

To be successful you will have:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as chemistry, bio-chemistry, chemical engineering or materials science/engineering. Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years of relevant postdoctoral experience.
  • High level written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent the research team effectively internally and externally, including at national and international conferences.
  • Demonstrated experience in implementation of biomolecule performance assays, tissue culture and microbiology.
  • Demonstrated experience in material characterization using different techniques, such as spectroscopic techniques, diffraction methods and microscopy investigations.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team, plus the motivation and discipline to carry out autonomous research.
