The position:

CSIRO Business & Infrastructure Services (CBIS) provides support to scientific staff by developing, maintaining and managing the buildings, laboratories and other research infrastructure across CSIRO owned and leased sites. Creating bold new solutions to equipment and instrument challenges proposed by researchers, CBIS manages and operates specialist engineering machine and fabrication centres at CSIRO sites in Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia.

As the manager of CSIRO’s engineering facilities, you will formulate and execute a strategic vison for developing, leading and motivating high performing teams of multi-disciplinary engineering staff. Leading specialist staff at each engineering facility, you will follow an enterprise-wide workshop model supporting the development of complex instruments and machines for a variety of research purposes. With expertise in drafting and 3D modelling, machining and sheet metalwork, electronics design and manufacture, fine toolmaking, test rig installation and commissioning, precision finishing of products and hardening and grinding, workshop staff are tasked with the development of prototype scientific instruments and other bespoke solutions for our client needs.

Ideally you will be based at the Clayton site in Melbourne, under the general supervision of the Executive Manager Portfolio Services. Over the last two years as part of a revitalisation vision for the workshops, CBIS has invested in new equipment and upgraded the Clayton facility. The vision will also require the expansion of the client base to create new opportunities and form strong and enduring client relationships.

As a minimum requirement, you will hold professional qualifications in Engineering (Mechanical, Mechatronics, Electrical, Structural) or Industrial Design. You will also have:

  • Highly developed customer focussed communication, interpersonal, influencing and negotiation skills.
  • Extensive experience leading and managing in a product or technology development environment.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills which have resulted in a transformation of team culture.
  • Sound business development, financial and commercial acumen.
  • Strong team skills and a history of professional behaviours.
