The Position

As a Research Scientist in our team, you will conduct innovative research in modelling genotype by environment by management (GxExM) interactions for genotype to phenotype predictions. Based at the Black Mountain Science and Innovation Precinct in Canberra, you will be part of a team that carries out strategic research in modelling based crop improvement for a range of crops, with a strong focus on wheat. This role will expand the capability of CSIRO Agriculture and Food and develop new approaches for genotype-phenotype modelling and model parameterisation with molecular markers and genomic data. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated track record in research in crop physiology and modelling science, preferably involving gene-based modelling, as well as a proven record of research, publications and delivering impact.

Your duties will include: 

• Conducting novel and innovative scientific research with practical application.
• Producing high quality scientific papers suitable for publication in quality journals and for presentation at national and international conferences.
• Communicating effectively and respectfully in the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of CSIRO's reputation.
• Working effectively as an integral member or leader of a multi-disciplinary, often regionally dispersed research team, to undertake independent scientific investigations and carry out associated tasks under broad guidance from more senior Research Scientists/Engineers.
• Working collaboratively and honestly with internal and external colleagues, clients and partners to develop and progress challenging but realistic research plans for a range of research projects.
• Leading small research projects and assist with elements of larger projects including the negotiation of resource requirements.

To be successful, you will need:

• A doctorate or equivalent research experience in process-based crop modelling, cropping systems modelling, crop physiology, functional genomics or a closely related discipline.
• Demonstrated research expertise in process-based crop modelling, model conceptualisation and development with specialisation in areas such as: modelling genetic controls underlying key physiological processes, evaluation of physiological traits, and genotype to phenotype predictions.
• Demonstrated expertise in modelling performance of crops and cropping systems across multiple environments, combined with complex management scenarios.
• Demonstrated experience in model parameter optimisation and automation against measurement data, with ability to do quick scenario modelling using high-performance computer facilities.
• High level skills in data management and quantitative data analysis, and the ability to program in a relevant scientific language.
• Demonstrated experience in contributing to research projects, liaising with clients to determine their needs, and preparing research proposals that are supported.
• The ability to work effectively as an integral member or leader of a multi-disciplinary research team, and foster an environment in which there is a high level of co-operation within and between teams.
• A record of science innovation and creativity plus the ability to apply well developed research skills to generate significant practical outcomes.
• A valid driver's licence or the ability to obtain one.
