As a Postdoctoral Fellow with CSIRO Agriculture and Food, you will design and implement innovative research activities that explore current and future on-farm experimentation technologies which enhance N fertilisation strategies across the Australian grains region. Gaining invaluable opportunities to interact with CSIRO colleagues, host farmers, and partners from other institutions, you will be guided and mentored by a multidisciplinary team of scientists and technical experts.
You will undertake research activities to examine how sensors can be deployed with crop models and modern statistical techniques to give farmers near real time N recommendations based upon what is sensed, rather than what is assumed. Utilising a combination of on-farm field experiments, proximal and remote sensing techniques and experimental approaches, as well as simulation modelling, you will provide expert evaluations on these technologies. Extension of outcomes in high impact scientific journals, field days and at conferences will be a key expectation of the Postdoctoral Fellow.
Specifically you will:
- Undertake literature reviews and use simulation modelling to develop hypotheses investigating on farm experimentation
- Deploy crop models, incrop sensing and advanced analytics to evaluate N decisions by farmers.
- Develop creative approaches to the analysis and dissemination of information from on farm experiments and test these approaches using field experiments and simulation modelling.
- Engage clients and liaise with farmers and industry consultants to deliver results.
- Publish results of research in scientific journals and prepare appropriate papers for presentation at conferences.
- Collaborate with scientists within the group and across CSIRO and identify future research opportunities.
Location: Floreat (Perth) Western Australia
Salary: AU $85k to AU $93k per annum, plus up to 15.4% superannuation

As a minimum requirement, you will hold a doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as agricultural science, remote sensing, applied statistics, quantitative agronomy, or precision agriculture. You will also have:
- A Class C (car) driver’s licence.
- High-level communication and team skills, including a sound publishing record in quality journals and a history of professional behaviours.
- An understanding about how advanced analytics can be deployed into agricultural systems.
- Familiarity with crop simulation modelling.
- Experience conducting agricultural field work, with an awareness of experimental design and analysis.
- The ability to work well in a team and carry out autonomous research.
- A record of science innovation and creativity.

To be eligible for this postdoctoral fellowship, you will have less than 3 years of relevant research experience since gaining your PhD.
