The Position

CSIRO’s Land and Water is seeking to appoint a Fish Ecologist.

As the successful candidate you will have good quantitative skills, knowledge of the relationship between fish, fish populations, river flows and other environmental factors in natural and artificial inland waters. Using these skill you will develop and lead projects that examine fish and fish populations in river basins.

We are seeking a person with a demonstrated science foundation in fish ecology and freshwater ecology, who has experience working in rivers and basins that have undergone flow changes. We are seeking skills that will progress scientific understanding of the relationship between fish, fish populations, river flows and other environmental factors in natural and artificial inland waters, with findings translated to management.

Your duties will include 

  • Incorporate novel approaches to scientific investigations by adapting and/or developing original concepts and ideas for new, existing and further research.
  • Advance knowledge on the ecology of freshwater fish and in particular, the relationships between fish and river flows.
  • Develop and lead research projects that examine fish and fish populations in river basins.
  • Develop models and decision-based support systems and recommendations that can be used by water managers whose activities target fish populations.

Location:      Canberra ACT or Wodonga VIC
Salary:          AU$113,338 - AU$132,811 plus up to 15.4% superannuation

 To be successful you will need

  • A doctorate in a fish ecology or relevant discipline area
  • Experience with freshwater fish and environmental flows research, particularly native fish.
  • Quantitative skills that can generate models or decision support systems and recommendations for water managers
  • Demonstrated understanding of management and science issues facing the Murray Darling Basin
  • A solid record of publications in quality, peer reviewed journals
  • Strong written and oral communication skills including the ability to publish research results, prepare reports and present the results of scientific investigations at national and international conferences and stakeholder meetings
  • A record of science innovation and creativity plus the ability & willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific investigations.
