The Position
As the Diagnostic Scientist, you will work in high biocontainment (BSL3) laboratories and contribute to the delivery of outputs across a range of quality assured laboratory diagnostic services. This position may require travel up to 4 weeks at a time in Asia, potentially multiple times in any given year.

Your duties will include:
  • Work within BSL3 and BSL4 laboratories to perform diagnostic virology testing under NATA/ISO 17025 accreditation for routine and emergency disease investigation.
  • Work as part of an afterhours on-call roster for the Virology team.
  • Work in overseas laboratories and host visiting scientists and collaborators from overseas institutions to develop and provide structured training in diagnostic test development.
  • Contribute to QA requirements, including reporting and authorising tests, maintaining up-to-date and accurate test records.

Location: Geelong, Vic
Tenure: Specified term of 3 years
Salary: AU$83k – AU$94K + up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

Under CSIRO policy only those who meet all essential selection criteria can be appointed.

  • Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent relevant experience in Biological Sciences or a related discipline.
  • High level experience in conducting and coordinating laboratory-based viral diagnostic tests with ability to train others at both the AAHL and overseas laboratories.
  • Demonstrated ability to take ownership for research projects, including independently planning, scheduling, executing and completing the required research activities, to deliver the completed project objectives to clients’ expectations.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary, often regionally dispersed research team, and business unit to carry out tasks in support of CSIRO's scientific objectives.
  • High level written and oral communication skills with the ability to maintain effective and respectful relationships with internal and external stakeholders from various cultural backgrounds.
  • Willingness and ability to travel overseas for periods up to 4 weeks to deliver project work and to provide structured training for overseas collaborators.
