This position is an exciting opportunity for an early career, highly motivated research scientist with skills in biosecurity, pest management and entomology or plant pathology to join the Managing Invasive Species and Diseases Program within the Health and Biosecurity Business Unit of CSIRO.

In this role you will help agricultural industries access international markets by developing and testing new approaches to meet the pest, disease and food safety standards required by Australia’s trading partners. This will involve conducting empirical research to support market access in collaboration with industry, regulators and scientists from diverse disciplines. Research will include development of phytosanitary systems approaches for market access, the exploitation of new and emerging digital and sensor technologies such as optical scanners and automated surveillance devices, and working closely with data analysts and modellers to develop the next generation of risk assessment tools for regulators and industry. That will involve designing trials and experiments to support current and future control measures, improve the sustainability of pest management practices, and to address important gaps in knowledge that relates to pest and pathogen biology.

The Biosecurity Scientist will also be required to broaden their research portfolio by identifying new opportunities and securing new funding for projects that deliver on CSIRO’s strategy. There will also be an opportunity to build and maintain networks, develop new business, provide scientific leadership and pursue new ideas and approaches that create new concepts and beneficial impacts.

• Devising strategy and assuming overall scientific responsibility for research and interpreting results to deliver on project-related outputs.
• Initiating and undertaking through to publication laboratory and field-based biosecurity research to help the agricultural sector develop and maintain market access.
• Maintaining a focus on adoption of R&D.
• Incorporating novel approaches to scientific study by adapting and/or developing original concepts and ideas into existing and future research.
• Under the guidance of senior colleagues, developing and contributing to new, multi-disciplinary research projects, including negotiation and securing of external funding requirements.
• Anticipating industry and/or community needs and market direction through client liaison/networking; identifying changes quickly and adapting as needed.
• Acting as a trusted advisor for industry. 
• Developing active collaborations with scientists from other disciplines that are working within the Trusted Agrifood Exports Mission.

Salary: AU$98K - AU$106K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

• A doctorate and/or equivalent research experience in a relevant discipline, such as ecological entomology or pathology, integrated pest or disease management, invasion biology and biosecurity.
• Relevant postdoctoral research experience or equivalent.
• Demonstrated theoretical, conceptual and practical knowledge relevant to biosecurity and integrated pest management, including strong empirical background in experimental research in pest/pathogen management or plant-insect/pathogen interactions, and statistical and data analysis skills.
• Laboratory and field-based research experience with insects or pathogens.
• Demonstrated ability to lead projects or components of large multi-disciplinary projects, and carry out independent individual research, to achieve project goals.
• A record of science and/or technological innovation and creativity, including the ability and willingness to incorporate novel ideas and lateral thinking into scientific investigations to develop appropriate solutions to research challenges.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken, needed to make research accessible to diverse audiences in constrained time frames. This includes a demonstrated ability to publish impactful research and to write reports and make scientific presentations to audiences with scientific and non-scientific backgrounds.
• The potential to, under guidance, identify and secure new strategically-aligned R&D opportunities through engagement with stakeholders and collaborators.
