Research Scientist - Food Safety & Stability

Our microbial food safety & stability capability teams are part of the Food Program which delivers science that underpins the development and delivery of healthy, safe and sustainable foods, food ingredients and beverages for Australia’s food industry and global consumers.

CSIRO is seeking to appoint a researcher with expertise in food microbiology, microbial food safety and food product stability. The position will conduct food safety and quality research for a range of stakeholders across a broad range of food sectors that investigates the risks and opportunities of microorganisms in food systems along with omics and bioinformatics investigations of key microorganisms involved in food processing, spoilage and foodborne illness.

Please note, we are recruiting 2 positions, one senior research scientist and one research scientist. The senior research scientist is also currently advertised.

Your duties will include:

  • Within broad guidelines, use professional expertise, knowledge of other disciplines and research experience/achievement to formulate, develop and complete an approved suite of client and strategic projects aligned to the impact areas of the Food Program.
  • Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams to investigate risks and opportunities of microorganisms in food systems along with omics and bioinformatics investigations of key microorganisms involved in food processing, spoilage and foodborne illness.
  • Anticipate industry and/or community needs and market direction through client liaison/networking and identify and adapt quickly to changes.
  • Lead and contribute to ensure timely project delivery including the conducting, interpretation, reporting and communication of research results to relevant audiences.

Salary:  AU$98k – AU$106k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  1. A doctorate in food microbiology or a related field, with evidence of relevant postdoc experience OR equivalent with more than six years related experience in research.
  2. Experience in designing, conducting, analysing and reporting food microbiology research across a broad range of food industries using a range of experimental approaches.
  3. A track record of scientific dissemination that may include peer reviewed publications, technical/industry or government reports, presentations at scientific conferences, industry workshops or in public fora.
  4. Demonstrated ability to lead and conduct research utilising a variety of omics and bioinformatic approaches or development of rapid methodologies for food applications.
  5. Evidence of anticipating industry and/or community needs and market direction through client liaison with demonstrated ability to attract external funding from the food industry.
