CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

As the Postdoctoral Fellow, you will join the team of Medical Decision Support project (https://research.csiro.au/lasc/projects/medical-decision-support/), focusing on information extraction from text (scientific literature and clinical notes). You will work with leading scientists on solving of research challenges associated with understanding and extracting information from clinical and biomedical text such as clinical notes and scientific literature. These projects span the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) methodologies including natural language processing, information retrieval, machine learning and clinical terminologies to support clinical service delivery using decision support solutions. The role is largely on developing novel algorithms of information extraction and knowledge discovery to help in medical decision making. We expect the outcomes to be high quality publications in reputable NLP/IR conferences and journals as well as software prototypes

Your duties will include:

  • Solving of research challenges associated with understanding and extracting information from clinical and biomedical text such as clinical notes and scientific literature. 
  • Development and deployment of related applications to support our research. 
  • Apply Artificial Intelligence (AI) methodologies including natural language processing, information retrieval, machine learning and clinical terminologies to support clinical service delivery using decision support solutions.
  • Represent CSIRO externally, including in public forums such as academic conferences, industry or the research sector or with Government.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and academic partners.

Salary:AU$88k - AU$96k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as Computer Science (Natural Language Processing/Computational Linguistics).  Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (or part time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Research background in information extraction.
  • Experience using deep learning and other machine learning techniques in NLP.
  • Fluent in Python programming.
