The Opportunity

  • Do you have a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Biomaterials Development and Design or a relevant discipline?
  • Help develop next generation bioresorbable magnesium materials for biomedical application
  • Join our Advanced Materials and Processing Program in CSIRO Manufacturing for this exciting postdoctoral role

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will join the Advanced Materials and Processing Program in the Manufacturing Business Unit to develop the next generation of bioresorbable magnesium (Mg) composite materials for biomedical applications by additive manufacturing. You will use your knowledge and skills in materials science and additive manufacturing to design and fabricate Mg composite scaffolds with suitable biocompatibility, controllable degradation rates and the ability to deliver drugs. A background in biomedical or materials science and engineering will be considered favourably.

Your duties will include:

  • Preparing Mg-based composite precursors which are suitable for 3D printing.
  • Fabricating Mg composite scaffolds by 3D printing and applying coatings to the scaffolds.
  • Testing the composite scaffolds in terms of mechanical properties, microstructure, chemical composition, drug delivery profile, degradation rates, etc.
  • Undertaking in vitro tests to study the biocompatibility, bioactivity and biodegradability of the scaffolds.
  • Presenting results in a meaningful format, preparing reports and writing scientific papers for publication.

Location: Clayton, Victoria
Salary: AU$89k - AU$98k plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure: Specified term of 3 years
Reference: 79514

To be considered you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as Materials Science and Engineering, Biomaterials Development and Design (e.g. light metals, ceramics and polymers) or other relevant disciplines. Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (full-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of 3D printing processes, and in particular, metallic 3D printing processes.
  • Proven experience in experimental characterisation and mechanical testing and property assessment.
  • Demonstrated understanding of biomaterials, in particular absorbable and degradable biomaterials.
  • High level written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent the research team effectively internally and externally, including the presentation of research outcomes at national and international conferences.
