The Opportunity

CSIRO’s Future Protein Mission is a rare opportunity to contribute to transforming existing protein industries and build new ones.

We need early to mid-career researchers in science and engineering to solve impossible problems and develop novel, differentiated protein products that meet both the health requirements and changing dietary patterns of the modern health and welfare conscious consumer. We aim to leverage increasing global demand for high quality protein to create new Australian protein products and ingredients that earn an additional $10b in revenue by 2030.

To do so, we’ll need to grow more protein, more sustainably, from more sources. By delivering value-added premium protein foods, feed and ingredients, the Future Protein mission will enable Australian breeders, growers, producers, processors and food manufacturers to capitalise on the rapid growth of the protein-based sector, contribute to national food security and give access to new export markets for wealth creation. New manufacturing facilities will bring jobs and sovereign manufacturing capability.

We are working to deliver:

  • Plant protein for new markets – with an initial focus on pulse crops we will support a fundamental shift from commodity to high value protein products with optimised taste and nutrition.
  • Animal protein production – we will grow and add value to Australia’s traditional high value protein industries of livestock and aquaculture. With sustainability as a driver, we will deliver differentiated premium protein foods for export markets.
  • Novel protein production systems –  we will transform low or no value side-streams through advanced biomanufacturing such as Precision Fermentation to deliver health-enhancing functional ingredients.

The mission is actively seeking to solve industry problems and turn ideas into innovations or concepts into companies. We are looking for entrepreneurial or venture-minded agrifood scientists for market-led innovation.

Your qualifications are essential for the current opportunities, but we are also looking for more unique skills to bring new ways of thinking, problem solving and leadership to contribute to CSIRO Missions and culture.

How we deliver progress and change is important.

An ability to recognise and exploit opportunities to carry out original, creative, and innovative research is essential. Your design thinking and  desire to generate impact will drive creativity, innovation and evolve our approach to unlocking a better future for everyone. By thinking beyond specific research projects to apply individual knowledge, skills, and expertise you will contribute to and support the national innovation system. Leveraging a broad network and relationships within national, global, trans-disciplinary and multi-stakeholder environments?and collaborating with a diverse range of stakeholders, you will challenge current approaches and develop future research.
