The CSIRO media team is the agency’s central liaison point for media, playing a critical role in translating CSIRO's research for media and the public. We are seeking a passionate and innovative Media Advisor for an indefinite role with extensive flexibility around working arrangements. Drawing on a contemporary and integrated skills set across the mix of traditional media, digital and social media and stakeholder engagement, the Media Advisor supports the development and execution of proactive media strategies and supports CSIRO’s issues management process to help protect the organisation’s reputation.

This role will help to devise and deliver media strategies and campaigns, build and nurture strategic media relationships, pitch stories to media, provide advice around editorial direction of CSIRO media stories, provide media training for spokespeople, and assist in the delivery of effective issues management strategies and processes. The Media Advisor is an energetic communications professional with experience with the media, either as a journalist or in media relations You will be an avid consumer of all forms of news, have a finely tuned risk radar, and a good understanding of how social and digital media intersect with and generate media. Ideally you will also have an understanding of the stakeholder and political environment in which CSIRO operates. An amount of interstate travel will be required in the role.

Your duties will include:

  • Working with Corporate Affairs and other stakeholders to develop and execute multi-platform, one-CSIRO media campaigns that harness the news cycle to raise CSIRO’s profile on topics of strategic significance to targeted audiences.
  • Acting as the central liaison point for media outlets. At times, managing the media phone and email out of hours, on a rostered basis.   
  • Developing and providing input into media releases, speeches, opinion pieces, blogs, feature articles, social and digital media, videos and multimedia content, and other content as required. 
  • Uploading media releases to CSIRO’s Digital Newsroom, distributing releases through Isentia, and SciMex, Eurekalert and AusSMC as needed. Providing advice and training to Corporate Affairs staff as required for uploading media release content
  • Working closely with the Media Manager and members of Corporate Affairs team to manage CSIRO’s proactive media calendar, ensuring alignment with one-CSIRO messaging and brand, coordination on timing for key audiences and outlets, and managing distribution of high-quality outputs for media and for our Digital Newsroom. 
  • Developing and nurturing media relationships across science, government, business and consumer media aligned with the priorities identified in the one-CSIRO media strategy, and proactively leveraging these relationships for the benefit of CSIRO.
  • Leading the analysis, evaluation and reporting of media coverage for CSIRO, using data-driven insights to recognise trends that inform our media strategy.  
  • Working with Corporate Affairs to provide media training and issues management advice and support to CSIRO’s spokespeople, including coaching and interview preparation.
  • Supporting the Media Manager to deliver timely responses to media when issues arise, including working with stakeholders across CSIRO to manage the Corporate Affairs register of issues briefs and media coverage, and escalate issues appropriately. 
  • Demonstrating the CSIRO values and promoting a strong safety culture through active management of HSE performance. Demonstrating a positive, can-do attitude towards other duties as directed.

Location: Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra or Brisbane preferred, but all AU CSIRO sites will be considered.
Salary: AU$87k - AU$98k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in journalism, communication or public relations or equivalent experience within large or complex organisations.
  • Experience working within a large or complex organisation, across a breadth of stakeholders
  • A history of demonstrated professional and respectful behaviours and attitudes in a collaborative environment.
  • Exceptional writing, editing and verbal communications skills, and attention to detail.
  • Strong digital skills (including experience in publishing to websites through a Content Management System), and confidence to learn new digital platforms including Telum, iSentia, Scimex, Aus SMC and Eurkalert
  • An understanding of the media and stakeholder environment in which CSIRO operates, and a strong news sense.
  • Demonstrated experience devising and delivering integrated communication campaigns that have cut-through and achieve objectives with target audiences.  
  • Demonstrated experience using analysis and evaluation of media coverage, to develop data-driven insights that inform media strategy.  
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment with the ability to turn around work within tight timeframes.
