We are seeking a dynamic and skilled Sustainability Scientist to join our CSIRO Land & Water business unit, and undertake collaborative research for building adaptive and resilient livelihoods & ecosystems in the Australia and Asia-Pacific region.

In this role, you will be part of CSIRO’s Livelihoods and Adaptive Development (LAAD) team that develops theories and process-based methods to test ideas and solutions for dealing with regional challenges and improving resilience. Our work in this space aims to address a range of interlinked social-ecological and community well-being issues related to climate change & disaster resilience, natural resource management, sustainable regional development, agri-food systems, and Indigenous aspirations and rights.

As a Sustainability Scientist, you will bring your expertise in transdisciplinary systems science to primarily collaborate with a range of external stakeholders, and address underlying root causes of these community-based challenges and assist in planning, preparing & conducting research activities. You will also represent CSIRO externally in public forums, and this role will involve travel in Australia, including remote or rural areas, and the Asia-Pacific region.

Your duties will include:

• Liaising with stakeholders to determine their needs to co-design decision-making processes and solutions.
• Assisting in the planning and preparation of research proposals and carrying out research investigations.
• Undertaking experimental and/or observational research activities and supervise/train others to ensure experiments are established in accordance with research design.
• Undertaking activities focused on one or more elements of larger research projects.
• Representing CSIRO externally, including in public forums, with industry, the research sector, civil society, and Government, requiring travel for project stakeholder engagement and research activities.
• Preparing and presenting results in a variety of formats, which may include reports for clients, scientific papers for publication, and other science communication outputs. 

Location: Townsville or Brisbane, QLD
Salary: AU$102K to AU$111K pa + up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

• A PhD (or an equivalent combination of qualifications and research experience) in a relevant field such as transdisciplinary systems science, with application to areas such as climate change and disaster, resilience, regional transitions, natural resource management and agri-food innovation systems.
• Demonstrated ability to undertake original, creative and innovative research.
• A demonstrated publication history of authorship on scientific papers in peer reviewed journals and/or reports.
• Research experience in one or more of the following: participatory processes/governance frameworks, regional resilience assessment, and decision-making.
• Expertise in the following methodological approaches and capacities: strong qualitative research methods, inter- / trans-disciplinary approaches, and ethical framing of research and engagement to ensure equity and social inclusion.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to write for scientific and practitioner audiences, as well as engage cross-culturally.
• Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
