CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a multi-organisation, inter-disciplinary team delivering cutting edge research and development in a project supported by an Innovation Grant from the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund. The project ‘Decide and Thrive’ will develop innovative and regionally relevant livestock ranking strategies to help businesses minimise the impacts of drought and preserve agricultural landscapes.

The successful candidate will work with leaders in the field to develop and/or apply quantitative livestock grazing models to investigate and evaluate drought resilience strategies, and to communicate and liaise with stakeholders to build and deliver successful research outcomes.

Your duties will include:

  • Development and application of quantitative models for the understanding of livestock grazing systems, with a view on optimising stocking decisions when preparing for, during and recovering from drought events.
  • Work as part of an interdisciplinary team across organisations, delivering to firm timelines.
  • Contribute to scientific approach, identification and implementation of key metrics, evaluation of selection strategies in a drought resilience context.
  • Working with third-party data sets will require an understanding and willingness to learn about requirements of working with confidential data.
  • Curation, handling, and analysis of complex and disparate data sets.

Salary: AU$89k - AU$98k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as agricultural sciences, animal/ruminant nutritional sciences, agricultural systems modelling, or similar.  To be eligible for this role you must have at least 1 and no more than 4 years (full-time or equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Proficiency or proven ability to acquire proficiency in one or more programming languages such as Python, C#, or similar.
  • Experience in the development and/or application of quantitative models for understanding agricultural and/or pastoral grazing systems.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this role, you must be an Australian/New Zealand Citizen, Australian Permanent Resident or Australian temporary resident currently residing in Australia.

Appointment to this role is subject to provision of a national police check and may be subject to other security/medical/character requirements.
