The Scientific Computing (SC) group within the Information Management & Technology (IMT) function provides end-to-end technology platforms ranging from corporate IT systems through to leading edge high performance data processing tools and platforms. The teams manage and support an edge to cloud computational and data fabric that includes several high performance computing (HPC) clusters, multiple hyperscale public cloud tenancies, mass storage and high performance tiered storage infrastructure with a national footprint. The group also provides hosting services for CSIRO’s corporate applications through provision of a highly versatile and robust virtualised platform, alongside support for organisational data management practices.

In joining the SC group, you will have the opportunity to work with this breadth of technology, and as a member of the team you will contribute to IMT’s forward strategy including bringing innovation to how our team provides technology services in support of the digital operations of CSIRO. The SC group also has a significant range of activities that provide support to CSIRO science teams in promoting best of breed implementation, uptake and adoption of our platforms across the areas of advanced visualisation, data processing, modelling, code optimisation, application support and software delivery. The group is highly customer-focussed and operates closely in partnership with all areas of CSIRO research.

The HPC and Research Platforms team within the IMT SC group has multiple opportunities for system administrators. In these roles you will collaborate with multiple internal teams to design, implement, integrate, administer and maintain on-premise scalable computing platforms, with a primarily focus in container orchestration. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to the management of our HPC platforms, high performance parallel file systems, advanced visualisation systems and associated networks. You will work closely with team members, technical leads and senior staff to develop a strategy to support integrated scientific workflows using different components of CSIRO’s hybrid on-prem and multi-cloud platforms. You will have a focus on scientific computing services meeting CSIRO research teams’ requirements across a broad range of disciplines.

To be considered you will need:

Pre-Requisites: Tertiary qualification or experience in Science, Engineering, Computer Science or Information Technology or other relevant field.

Essential Criteria: 

Under CSIRO policy only those who meet all essential criteria can be appointed.

  • Experience in systems administration of Linux based solutions.
  • Experience in administering container orchestration systems.
  • Experience with high level automation techniques using languages such as Python, Bash and Perl.
  • Experience in producing technical and procedural documentation.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience in system monitoring, including metrics collection, alert handling, reporting and dashboarding.

Your duties will include:

  • Collaborate with other teams to maintain a fit-for-purpose on premise container orchestration platform. This includes but is not limited by:
    • Optimisation through automation
    • Ensuring the solution remains secure and resilient
    • Client on-boarding
    • Monitoring
    • Capacity management
    • Documentation refresh
    • Championing the solutions capability within the organisation
    • Mentoring and knowledge sharing
  • Follow and contribute to the development of best practice guides and policies, such as application workload management, quota management and cyber security.
  • Follow and contribute to service management processes, including change management, configuration management and incident management.
  • Liaise effectively with users regarding the delivery of services to meet their needs.

Location: All CSIRO sites AU wide 
Salary: AU$102k - AU$111k plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure: Specified Term of 3 years Full-time with possibility of extension or permanency
