We are currently seeking an experienced and efficient Research Station Manager to join our CSIRO Chiswick Agricultural Research Station at Armidale NSW!

CSIRO’s Chiswick Research Station undertakes research on solutions for the sheep, cattle and poultry industries. In this busy and multi-faceted role, you will bring your knowledge & understanding of how a research station operates and well-developed leadership and people management skills to ensure the smooth running of research station activities and management of multi-disciplinary teams. 

As the Research Station Manager, you will play a key coordinating and leadership role to manage and develop the operational activities and work closely with livestock researchers based at the research station and at other CSIRO sites. While you will be primarily based at Chiswick (NSW), you will also have oversight of our research stations in Woodstock and Bribie Island (QLD), including providing line management of the research station managers, and therefore will be required to travel occasionally. You will also be at the forefront of establishing & maintaining collaborative partnerships with research staff to develop and implement a digital strategy for the research station.

Your duties will include:

  • Team Management: Direct line managing the Chiswick research station staff, and Research Station Managers at two other CSIRO research stations in QLD, including their day-to-day performance, time & resource management, team cohesion & motivation, relationships with research teams/staff and compliance with HSE standards & procedures.
  • Chiswick Research Station Management: Managing the strategic planning and day-to-day activities of the Chiswick Research Station, including overseeing land management activities and strategies to maximise utility for ongoing scientific experimentation, liaising with Site Leader and other senior leaders & committees to co-develop solutions for the site, etc.
  • Research Support: Working with a diverse range of scientific equipment with emphasis on the digital capabilities of the research station, data acquisition, data validation and management, data storage and researcher access; collaborating with research groups; and communicating activities of the research station.
  • Regulatory and other Compliance Duties: Ensuring compliance requirements with regard to managing a CSIRO research station are met.
  •  Other general duties as directed.

Salary: AU$102K – AU$111K pa + up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • Relevant tertiary degree in Agricultural Science, and/or significant relevant experience in Agricultural Science, Livestock Agricultural systems, Digital and/or Precision Agriculture.
  • Qualifications and/or demonstrated experience in relevant digital technology.
  • Experience in working with a research organisation and establishing and maintaining relationships with researchers. 
  • Strong communication and organisational skills, and ability to negotiate positive outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, and work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed team, and carry out tasks autonomously.
  • Proven ability and willingness to contribute novel ideas and approaches. 
  • A current Australian driver’s licence.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for this role, you must be an Australian/New Zealand Citizen or an Australian Permanent Resident.

Appointment to this role is subject to provision of a national police check and may be subject to other security/medical/character requirements.

The successful candidate must be willing and able to undertake moderate physical activity commensurate with livestock farming activities, and undertake occasional travel within Australia for short periods.
