The Opportunity

  • Do you want to advance your scientific knowledge & experience?
  • Work in a leading scientific institution with dedicated professionals.
  • Join CSIRO – Australia’s premier science & technology research organisation.

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

In this position you will use statistical modelling techniques to conduct research on the identification of certain profiles or segments of people based on behaviours and other characteristics (psychological and personal). You will identify behavioural and psychological patterns linked to ‘protective’ behaviours (such as recycling, weight loss, healthy food consumption, exercising, medication adherence). Research has indicated that health protective behaviours tend to cluster - that is, that people who follow healthier diets also have higher exercise levels, improved mask-wearing during pandemics, and lower rates of smoking.

This research aims to develop ‘success profiles’ that could lead to longer term outcomes, such as, identification of characteristics that could be target of interventions that are more likely to result in successful outcomes; and development of true personalisation methods based on sophisticated profiles.

Your duties will include:

  • Review existing literature and theory to understand existing knowledge.
  • Undertake statistical courses to build knowledge of latent profile analysis and n-of-1 methods, where needed.
  • Establish national and international collaborations relevant to the project scope.
  • Identify existing data sources that could be used to develop individual ‘success profiles’.
  • Develop data collection tools to test and refine n-of-1 methods.

Location:   Adelaide, SA
Salary:  AU$89k - AU$98k plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure:  Specified term of 3 years
Reference:  82680

To be considered you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a discipline area including, but not limited to, psychology, biostatistics, applied statistics, behavioural science or public health. Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (or part-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Experience with advanced modelling techniques (Latent Profile Analysis, Structural Equation Modelling, Cluster Analysis and/or other advanced methods).
  • High level written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent the research team effectively internally and externally, including the presentation of research outcomes at national and international conferences.
  • A sound history of publication in peer-reviewed journals and/or authorship of scientific papers, reports, grant applications or patents.
  • A record of science innovation and creativity, including the ability & willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific investigations.
