CSIRO are seeking a Portfolio Manager/Patent Prosecution Specialist to contribute to the effective delivery of Intellectual Property (IP) services. You will be providing IP advice to internal and external stakeholders, filing patent applications and responding to IP prosecution activities. The role is aligned with the Energy Business Unit and the successful candidate will work closely with the IP Manager for Energy.

In this position, you will contribute to the design and implementation of compliance programs, risk management initiatives and other CSIRO wide projects aimed at improved IP management practises across CSIRO. You’ll be liaising with scientist’s working at the cutting edge of their fields so having a background and/or degree in science/engineering is a must this coupled with your strong understanding of Patent Law and Practice will see you well placed to join team CSIRO.

Your duties will include:

  • Working as part of the Commercial team in building IP assets.
  • Engaging with Research Program Leaders and technical staff to manage IP assets.
  • Providing proactive specialist IP advice and support to internal stakeholders including key science teams.
  • Supporting ongoing development of improved IP internal education initiatives and training systems across the organisation.
  • Actively managing relationships with external clients, stakeholders and service providers, including external legal counsel and patent attorneys.
  • Promoting strategies to streamline engagement, where appropriate and legally prudent.
  • Assisting with IP administrative matters.
  • Other duties as directed to ensure the continued success of the IP function.

Location: Open to candidates in Brisbane QLD, Melbourne VIC or Sydney NSW
Salary: AU$102,724 - AU$111,165k per annum plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • Registered Patent Attorney, near qualified/trainee patent attorney, IP portfolio manager or patent prosecution specialist with strong technical skills.
  • Degree qualifications in engineering or science (Chemistry).
  • Experience in the following areas: patent law and patent prosecution practice in Australia (knowledge of additional jurisdictions would be highly regarded), assessment of invention disclosures and reviewing technical documents, patent specifications and novelty searches with a view to identifying patentable material.
  • Demonstrated ability to show initiative and willingness to take on IP administration tasks.
  • Ability to work independently, providing pragmatic solutions in managing intellectual property and for complex problems.
  • A strong history of establishing and working effectively in teams, building trust and fostering effective internal and external client relationships.
  • Previous experience in an in-house IP management role.
  • A working knowledge of trademarks, confidential information, protection of know-how and trade secrets.
  • Knowledge of, or an interest in, emerging technical solutions for addressing the current challenges facing the Australian Energy market.
