About the role

We have a unique opportunity for an experienced Senior Research Scientist to join our NAL team. The Department of Communication Sciences at NAL is seeking a researcher with a track record in research on speech and language development in children with or without hearing loss. The position represents a unique opportunity for the right person to make a substantial difference to the lives of young children with hearing problems. The successful candidate will be a leading member in the Department, and will work closely with other research scientists, audiologists, and speech pathologists. You will provide strong input into existing projects of the team, and will develop and seek funding for new projects that are consistent with the strategic objectives of NAL.

The key responsibilities of this role include but are not limited to:

• Provide leadership in an area of expertise relevant to innovations in hearing and intervention for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children to prevent and reduce the impact of avoidable hearing loss
• Obtain funding for research that is consistent with the strategic objectives of NAL from a range of sources such as government, philanthropic, and commercial entities
• Prepare and deliver ethics applications, progress reports, scientific manuscripts, and seminars on the research and translational activities
• Supervise and mentor students and research staff as required
• Support existing collaborations and develop new linkages with stakeholder organisations, clinical partners, and industry
• Contribute to and support the leadership and strategic objectives of NAL

The successful candidate must have:

• A PhD qualification in a relevant area or equivalent. Post-docs or candidates close to completion of a PhD may apply
• A track record of publications and grant funding success
• Proven experience and expertise in research involving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families
• Experience working with clinical partners and families
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills relevant to interaction with clinicians and recipients of hearing devices as well as other members of the research team and external collaborators
• Excellent written communication skills
• Excellent organisational and time and work management skills
• A current driver’s licence and willingness to travel
