About AIMS

The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) is Australia’s tropical marine research agency.

Our research into some of Australia’s iconic marine ecosystems guides their management and that of similar systems around the world. We do marine science that has practical benefit to the real world, providing high quality, large-scale and long-term research that is used by governments, industry and the wider community to make informed decisions about the Great Barrier Reef, North-West Shelf and Arafura and Timor Seas.

AIMS researchers at our locations in Townsville, Darwin and Perth have access to the best tools and equipment like the National Sea Simulator, cutting edge laboratories and our fleet of research vessels.

About this Opportunity

As an experienced biological or chemical oceanographer, you will lead a group of scientists and conduct field-based research to investigate issues associated with tropical coastal marine water quality, with a focus on shelf-scale nutrient dynamics, and the transport and fate of particulate and organic materials.

You will work across an inter-disciplinary team and contribute your research and technical skills to solve complex environmental problems as well as establish collaborations with external clients to increase the presence of AIMS’ research capacity in this field.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a world leading organisation with attractive working conditions including a 9-day fortnight, generous leave entitlements, transportation to site, a salary range of $99,609 - $129,662 and 15.4% superannuation.  This role is being offered for a minimum 5 year term and will be based in Townsville, Queensland.

About You

You will have an advanced level of understanding of biological, oceanographic and marine biogeochemical processes underpinned by an excellent publication record and be able to demonstrate:

  • PhD and postdoctoral experience related to marine water quality and pollution research;
  • Knowledge of coastal and marine water quality dynamics and the environmental factors that influence it;
  • Ability to lead small teams in conducting field-based research; and
  • Proven ability to lead and initiate quality research efforts, fostering a collaborative research culture amongst multi-disciplinary scientists.
