The APS 6 Planning Capability Officer (locally referred to as the Operations Manager) is responsible to the Commanding Officer of Joint Logistics Unit (North) [JLU(N)], under broad direction, to manage and coordinate the Operations Department in the provision of operational materiel logistic support to offshore and regional operations including support to dependent units in the Northern Territory / Kimberly Region. The Operations Manager manages a small staff comprising Navy and Army uniformed personnel and influences internal and external military, public service and contractor stakeholders. The Operations Manager may be required to represent the unit in a variety of external formal and informal fora including committees and working groups with regional and national stakeholders; this may include undertaking a leadership role.

The Operations Manager provides a planning and execution capability, on behalf of the Commanding Officer, for implementation of effective materiel logistic support to current and future ADF operations and exercises and for the maintenance and exercising of regional contingency plans. The Operations Manager will develop and refine Operations Department practices and procedures which complement higher organisational directives and instructions, including effective utilisation of lessons identified. The Operations Manager manages designated minor informal unit projects and unit aspects of formal Defence projects including the introduction of new capabilities into the unit.

The Operations Manager is subject to out-of-hours call out and participates in the unit's Duty Operations Officer roster where they will be on call approximately one week in four.
