The Group Leader Specialised Coatings Technology reports to the Research Leader Non-Acoustic Signature Management; and under broad guidance is responsible for the leadership of a group of scientists, engineers and technicians who define the Specialised Coatings Technology Science & Technology Capability (STC).  The Group Leader will lead a complex area of S&T by providing the leadership, vision, guidance, direction and collaboration to ensure that the capability is harnessed to deliver agreed outputs to Defence.  The Group Leader will be responsible for the development of people, supervise senior staff, and create a motivating and collaborative culture to ensure that staff can effectively contribute to the output of the STC.

The Group Leader will forecast future Defence problems, initiate research and generate new knowledge to produce enhanced capability. They will be able to select the best scientific method to achieve Defence outcomes, and review the S&T quality of reports and publications. They are accountable for the development and sustainment of the quality of the S&T work to the level agreed with the Research Leader Non-Acoustic Signature Management. They will have a sound understanding of Defence client priorities and transpose these into a well-planned set of S&T activities.  They will ensure that the STC resources are applied to agreed priority activities and will demonstrate flexibility to adjust the work plan as required.

The Group Leader will manage the resources to achieve task milestones, and will report work outcomes to client representatives on a regular basis. They will have a national or international reputation in a specific field of S&T, and considerable experience, awareness and knowledge across a range of science applied to Defence. The Group Leader will develop and maintain collaborative linkages in DST; and build and maintain strong relationships with external stakeholders in industry, universities and overseas organisations.
