Group Leader (GL) Vehicle Survivability (VS) leads a team of scientists, engineers and technicians to conduct research and development in the areas of multi-role armour systems, predictive modelling, protective appliques, improved materials and cabin survival systems. GLVS reports to Research Leader Land Vehicles and Systems (RLLVS) of Land Division, Defence Science and Technology Group. Under broad guidance from RLLVS, GLVS is responsible for developing and sustaining the Science and Technology Capability in Vehicle Survivability. GLVS is also responsible for work programs applying the Science and Technology Capability and delivering research outputs and outcomes to increase blast and ballistic survivability of land vehicles and their crews.

In order to effectively perform the role, the Group Leader will need to have a national or international reputation in the field of vehicle survivability and protection or a related scientific discipline. The GL will have considerable experience, awareness and knowledge across a range of Science and Technology (S&T) applied to Defence. The GL will forecast future Defence problems, initiate research and generate new knowledge to deliver enhanced Defence capability. The GL will be able to develop and apply scientifically sound methodologies to achieve Defence outcomes, and to review the S&T quality of reports and publications prepared by the team. They will be responsible for establishing and maintaining a motivated and collaborative culture within the group and manage resources to achieve project milestones and deliverables.

The Vehicle Survivability STC is based in a state-of-the-art research facility located in Fishermans Bend, Victoria. It is part of Land Vehicles and Systems Major Science and Technology Capability (MSTC) of Land Division within the Defence Science and Technology Group. Land Vehicles and Systems MSTC includes Advanced Vehicle Systems, System Integration and Tactical Networks, Land Logistics, and Vehicle Survivability STCs.
