Position Overview
An S&T4 Wireless Telecommunications Specialist position exists within the Communications Signal Processing (CSP) group of Cyber and Electronic Warfare Division (CEWD), which is based in DST Group Edinburgh. This position provides an early career opportunity to be involved in state-of-the-art technology development in support of next generation wireless telecommunication systems analysis and design. The successful candidate will be part of a multi-disciplinary team, exercise a high level of initiative and motivation, and contribute to innovative design approaches in support of Australia's future Defence Force. They will also have a good knowledge and, or strong desire to learn about communications theory, mobile wireless telecommunications protocols and standards, with the aim to develop and implement novel solutions.
Duties and Key Result Areas
The major responsibility of the S&T4 Wireless Telecommunications Specialist is to undertake novel communications engineering activities and tasks under limited direction. The successful applicant will have significant knowledge of a wide range of techniques and applications, provide alternative solutions to identified problems, and be willing to work on, or be involved in breakthrough technology development. They will exercise initiative and judgement to evaluate different techniques and applications to meet Defence challenges, and engage with stakeholders to identify expectations, deliver services, and achieve outcomes.
Key attributes expected of the candidate for this position area:
- Problem solving ability, rigor, and creativity to identify appropriate solutions to demanding challenges.
- Application of scientific, engineering principles and concepts, including investigation and analysis to solving technical problems.
- Enthusiasm to participate in research activities that contribute to breakthrough technology developments, and or the extension of existing knowledge.
- Familiarity with software and hardware systems development, with a willingness to apply this to wireless telecommunications.
- Ability to work within a team environment transitioning research outcomes to Defence capabilities.
- Good interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
- Willingness to undertake further studies and travel as required.
Key requirements of the role
Applicants will have studied communications theory and would be keen to employ their knowledge to solve challenging problems and discover novel approaches in the fast changing field of mobile wireless communications.
Applicants should be confident in the use of a range of programming languages and software tools, such as MATLAB, JAVA, C++, PYTHON.
It is expected that the successful candidate will likely have a degree or equivalent experience in a science or engineering discipline, and a few years relevant experience. A willingness to learn theoretical and practical aspects of next generation telecommunication systems, with the aim to implement novel solutions is highly desirable.
