Deputy Secretary Defence People

The Department of Defence is seeking an outstanding senior executive to lead the Defence People Group.

As part of the Defence Senior Leadership team, the Deputy Secretary Defence People vacancy presents a unique and exciting opportunity for the right person to play a key role in influencing and shaping the people reform agenda in Defence.

The Defence People Group delivers high quality human resource outcomes across the Defence employment cycle from strategy and policy development, through to implementation and service delivery. It brings together elements from across Defence to deliver sustainable people capability in line with the Defence White Paper and the First Principles Review.

In this role you will lead the Defence People Group, overseeing the functions of over 1500 geographically dispersed staff and have responsibility for a budget of approximately $500 million. The Group is the principal and authoritative source of advice in relation to people management outcomes and issues of importance to the Minister for Defence, the Minister for Defence Industry, the Minister for Defence Personnel and senior departmental officials.

Additionally, you will be responsible for overseeing key organisation-wide reforms of a challenging nature, including diversity and inclusion, incorporating such matters as Pathway to Change and evolving the Defence culture, as well as the implementation of shared people services. The work undertaken by the Group in many areas of its operation has an APS-wide impact and the role is often called on to advise outside the Department on people and cultural change initiatives.

To be a strong contender, you will be self-aware, positive in considering and respecting a diversity of ideas and perspectives, and have the courage to challenge the status quo when it does not serve the required outcome.  You will be innovative, consultative, resilient and personally accountable for the quality of advice and the delivery of results.

The remuneration package includes superannuation, an Executive Vehicle allowance and, where applicable, relocation expenses. The salary component for this position may be negotiated with the successful candidate within the Defence SES Band 3 salary range.

Engagement may be negotiated on an ongoing basis or for a specified term. To be eligible for engagement, an applicant must be, or intend to become, a permanent Australian citizen. This is a security-designated position. The successful applicant will be required to undergo security assessments to the appropriate level.

The Department of Defence supports flexible working arrangements where required.
