Registrar of Military Justice

 

The Office of the Judge Advocate General is seeking an outstanding senior Australian lawyer to appoint as the Registrar of Military Justice in the Australian Defence Force. The Registrar of Military Justice is a statutorily independent officeholder appointed under the Defence Force Discipline Act 1982 (Cth). The successful applicant will be appointed for a specified term up to five years.

The Registrar of Military Justice works with the Judge Advocate General, Chief Judge Advocate, Director of Military Prosecutions, Director of Defence Counsel Services and other appointees involved in the military discipline system to ensure the efficient and proper functioning of courts martial and Defence Force magistrate trials.

SELECTION CRITERIA

In order to be successful in this important role, an individual should meet the following essential selection criteria:

  • enrolled as a legal practitioner for at least five years and holding (or eligible to hold) a current Australian practicing certificate;
  • experienced as a senior lawyer and leader, in positions of authority and responsibility, working in complex environments, balancing competing priorities and delivering timely, effective and rigorous results; and
  • familiar with the Australian Defence Force’s military justice system, particularly the Defence Force Discipline Act 1982.

 

An applicant who is not an officer in the Australian Defence Force will have to successfully undergo the Defence Force recruitment process before being eligible for appointment to the position.

To be eligible for employment with Defence, an applicant must be an Australian citizen. The successful applicant will be required to undergo a security clearance vetting process.

Selection interviews will be scheduled for mid April 2018.
