The Department of Defence’s primary role is to defend Australia and its national interests. In delivering Defence capability to the Australian Government, Defence seeking to fill a number of vacancies in its Senior Leadership Group and establish a merit list of highly suitable candidates for vacancies that may occur in the near term.

Positions currently exist in the following areas of the Department’s work: Strategic Policy and Intelligence; Program Performance and Management; Financial Management; and in commercial and legal leadership.

To be successful in joining the Department’s Senior Leadership Group you will need to be someone who can play a key role in promoting and influencing the work of the organisation and its people. The core competencies require someone who has a strong track record in managing large teams, practicing inclusive leadership, who respects diversity of both people and ideas and who leads by example. You must demonstrate that you have judgment of the highest order and an ability to effectively challenge the status quo when you consider this is required. When applying for these roles you must demonstrate a genuine commitment to building an organisation that values and rewards strong performance and exemplary corporate behaviour. Highly competitive candidates will need to be self-aware and be someone who is able to demonstrate leadership traits that align with the One Defence Leadership Behaviours and the organisation’s cultural intent.

Engagement may be negotiated on an ongoing or non-ongoing basis. To be eligible, an applicant must be, or intend to become, an Australian citizen. These are security-designated positions. Successful applicants will be required to undergo security assessments and for some roles, to the highest level. The positions are located in Canberra.
