The Group Leader Land Logistics reports to the Research Leader, Land Vehicles & Systems, within the Defence Science & Technology (DST) Group. Under broad direction they will undertake work with a high level of complexity and sensitivity. They will provide effective leadership to a team of scientists, engineers and technicians who define the Land Logistics Science & Technology Capability (STC). The Group Leader will have comprehensive research experience in one or more science areas pertinent to the STC, including autonomy, digitisation, logistics systems, and complex systems integration. They will have considerable knowledge across a range of Science & Technology applied to Defence logistics and military operations.

They will forecast future Defence problems, initiate research and generate new knowledge to deliver enhanced Defence capability. They will be able to select the best scientific method to achieve Defence outcomes, review the S&T quality of reports and publications for the STC and be accountable for the development and sustainment of the quality of the S&T work to the level agreed with the Research Leader Land Vehicles & Systems.

The Group Leader will provide the vision, guidance and direction necessary to deliver S&T excellence and high impact Defence outcomes.  They will provide effective supervision of S&T staff to create a motivating and collaborative culture, and develop staff to ensure they can make effective contributions to client outputs. The Group Leader will guide the formulation of client priorities, and transpose these into a well-planned set of S&T activities.  They will ensure that the Land Logistics STC’s resources are applied to agreed priority activities and adapt the work plan as circumstances change. They will manage resources to achieve task milestones, and will report work outcomes to client representatives.

The Group Leader will develop and maintain appropriate external linkages to industry, universities and overseas organisations.
