Defence Export Controls - where strategic policy, international relations, industry and academia, Commonwealth legislation, and counter-proliferation come together to protect Australia’s national interests.

Defence Export Controls leads the development and implementation of policy related to the export of Defence and strategic goods. It also assures Defence’s compliance with other nations’ export conditions, and issues permissions to export, supply, broker and publish controlled technologies. DEC has a focus on supporting Defence industry whilst protecting ADF capability and countering the proliferation of conventional, chemical, biological and nuclear weapons.

DEC has five sections that undertake a wide range of functions:

  • Regulatory Affairs and Compliance
  • Technical Assessments
  • Export Assessments and Regimes
  • Legislation and Policy
  • International Export Control and Treaty

Defence Export Controls is responsible for the delivery of Australia’s export controls regime and works closely with a range of internal and external stakeholders including the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Attorney-General’s Department, the Australian Border Force, International Policy Division and the Australian Intelligence Community. As part of its role preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, DEC represents Australia at a range of international fora and multilateral non-proliferation regimes, and assists in the conduct of outreach programs domestically and internationally. 

What might you do in a day in Defence Export Controls?

  • Engage with industry partners to discuss an emerging export opportunity
  • Consider Australia’s compliance with international obligations
  • Travel and participate in an international control regime
  • Discuss export considerations with Australia’s intelligence agencies
  • Consider legislative requirements before recommending the issuing of an export permit
  • Discuss operational implications of a military export with Navy, Army or Air Force stakeholders
  • Assess the potential utility of exports for Weapons of Mass Destruction programs
  • Conduct enquiries and work with enforcement agencies on non-compliance
  • Consider and update export-related policy and legislation.
  • Provide advice on navigating other nations’ export regimes, including the United States International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR)
  • Prepare submissions for senior Departmental and Ministerial stakeholders
