Defence Export Controls - where strategic policy, international relations, industry and academia, Commonwealth legislation, and counter-proliferation come together to protect Australia’s national interests.
Defence Export Controls leads the development and implementation of policy related to the export of Defence and strategic goods. It also assures Defence’s compliance with other nations’ export conditions, and issues permissions to export, supply, broker and publish controlled technologies. DEC has a focus on supporting Defence industry whilst protecting ADF capability and countering the proliferation of conventional, chemical, biological and nuclear weapons.
DEC has five sections that undertake a wide range of functions:
Defence Export Controls is responsible for the delivery of Australia’s export controls regime and works closely with a range of internal and external stakeholders including the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Attorney-General’s Department, the Australian Border Force, International Policy Division and the Australian Intelligence Community. As part of its role preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, DEC represents Australia at a range of international fora and multilateral non-proliferation regimes, and assists in the conduct of outreach programs domestically and internationally.
