The Maritime Capability Analysis (MCA) Branch seeks to improve and expand its modeling and simulation capability. We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with computing, applied mathematics or physics skills to assist in developing modelling and simulation capabilities and apply them to issues challenging the Navy today and in the future.  Training and development opportunities will be frequently available to hone your computing and analysis skills as they apply to this role. You will have opportunities to travel interstate, observe exercises and gather data at sea on board Navy ships. You will make a contribution to resolving emerging questions on how Australia’s warships should be made ready to go to sea, deploy to where they are needed, and fight to win.

Come join a team which works collaboratively with scientists from different disciplines to understand, shape, improve and grow the modelling and simulation capabilities across the Defence Science and Technology Group (DST). You will be able to apply and develop your skills in Python programming and scientific computing and support quality software development and management by utilising existing tools and techniques as well as new and novel approaches. This position will give you the opportunity to exploit state of the art DST private cloud and High Performance Computing infrastructure, apply GPU computing, work with Data Scientists and implement machine learning algorithms.

As the ideal candidate you have the passion and ability to solve problems by applying your computing and analysis skills to studies that inform the Navy’s future. Your knowledge in software development and the ability to exploit different hardware environments will equip you to improve how research is conducted in support of the Navy today. Your desire to innovate will drive you to investigate new methods and solutions. Your excellent verbal and written communication skills will enable you to collaborate with Navy personnel, academia and industry with clarity and influence. You will contribute to a culture and practice of sharing, re-use and cooperation in model development, employment and maintenance.

DST is an inclusive employer, committed to diversity and equity in the workplace. At DST you will enjoy a range of flexible, family-friendly working arrangements including options to purchase additional annual leave, a paid stand down period between Christmas and New Year. For the future conscious a superannuation contribution of 15.4% will be made on your behalf by Defence, higher than most industries, with the option to make additional contributions.
