Research Specialist Mathematical Modelling

Executive Level 2 (S&T Level 6)
$118,376  - $142,087 (plus super)
Edinburgh, SA

The Joint & Operations Analysis Division is looking to fill a Research Specialist Mathematical Modelling role (RS MM). This is a leadership role within the Mathematical Decision Analysis (MDA) discipline of the Land Design & Analysis (LD&A) group, Land Capability Analysis (LCA) branch.

As a respected researcher in mathematical modelling, the RS MM sets the research direction into modelling and decision analysis methods relevant to informing future Land Force capability needs.

The RS MM is responsible for:

  • Leading research into novel ways of modelling and analysing future Land Force designs, quantitative assessment of the military utility of technologies as part of a combined arms force and trade-offs in the mix of interdependent capabilities
  • Leading mathematical military utility assessment focusing on evaluation of options in support of Army Programs and Projects (e.g. Land400)
  • Guiding the application of the scientific principles, techniques and methods from the mathematical decision analysis domain in the analysis of highly complex problems facing the Joint Land Force
  • Undertaking innovative research aimed at informing complex decisions on transformational change
  • Maintaining a thorough knowledge of innovative methods in mathematical modelling relevant to assessment of military utility, especially under conditions of uncertainty
  • Developing relationships and building networks with major national and international centres and research programs in relevant areas
  • Anticipation of future research directions, corresponding to MDA capability needs
  • Developing research objectives and corresponding strategies for their implementation
  • Scientific quality assurance of outputs

Army operates as a combined arms fighting system, which requires the integration of capability effects as part of a complex system. Analysing and quantifying the possible impacts of technological and conceptual changes requires the development of flexible and innovative approaches, especially considering the uncertainty of future operating environments and complexity of the increasing dependencies between key capabilities.

Some interstate travel will be required from time to time. Regular engagement with military personnel is a requirement of the position.

Application Closing Date: Thursday 6 February 2019 11:30pm (AEDT)
