The Role
Satellite Communications Systems Program Office (SATCOMSPO) located in Brindabella Business Park, Canberra are seeking Engineers. SATCOMSPO acquires and sustains leading edge SATCOM equipment supporting Australian Defence Force (ADF) operations, both locally and overseas. You will lead and contribute to significant technological change to Defence communication capabilities including the ADF future SATCOM capability (Joint Project 9102), Wideband Global SATCOM partnership with the US DoD (JP 2008 Phase 4), IS-22 satellite narrow-band payload (JP 2008 Phase 5A), Optus C1 payload (JP 2008 Phase 3D) along with supporting terrestrial based infrastructure and equipment.

The positions require stakeholder (including industry) engagement and therefore will require excellent communication and interpersonal skills. We are seeking candidates with a diverse range of experience and backgrounds in communications engineering, including people who have gained experience outside of Defence and Government. All SATCOMSPO engineers will be eligible for secondment to the Australian Wideband Global SATCOM Authority to undertake testing activities on a range of satellite Earth Terminals for the Whole of Government.

About our Team
The new Space Systems Branch has been established to acquire and sustain SATCOM systems and be a trusted advisor of SATCOM systems for the Australian Defence Organisation. The SATCOM SPO team consists of professionals from various disciplines including project management, engineering, commercial, and logistics. This multi-disciplinary team is composed of highly skilled and motivated Australian Public Servants, Australian Defence Force personnel, and contracted personnel operating in a high-tempo, dynamic environment. We are looking for experienced, high performing Communication Engineers to help achieve our project objectives. The team works from Brindabella Park offices in Canberra and maintains close collaboration with other areas of Defence and Government Agencies.

Our Ideal Candidate
SATCOMSPO is seeking highly motivated and skilled Communications Engineers with an interest in delivering strategically significant capability to the ADF.

The ideal candidate will have experience and comprehensive knowledge in Defence Engineering Management, preferably large acquisition projects or sustainment and be able to demonstrate strong leadership capabilities. They will also have extensive knowledge of and compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence’s mission and policy requirements.

  • Extensive knowledge of the methodology, systems and procedures within the engineering management function;
  • Strong business acumen and sound commercial judgement;
  • A thorough understanding of Defence’s engineering disciplines;
  • Demonstrated experience managing teams in a complex environment;
  • Excellent communication and customer engagement skills with ability to negotiate and build relationships with stakeholders; and
  • High level organisational skills, self-drive and initiative with the ability to influence others to achieve results and business objectives.
