The Role
As the Discipline Leader Camouflage Coatings and Signatures, you will nurture, lead and be responsible for a multidisciplinary team, comprising APS staff and embedded contractors that deliver functional coating research and advice to the Australian Defence Force across the aerospace, land and maritime domains. This includes the design, formulation and evaluation of functional coatings with tailored properties in the UV, visible, NIR, TIR and radar regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Your team will also evaluate the durability of the coatings and optimise them for key performance properties.

You will liaise with other Defence and Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) personnel in the planning and execution of field trials to demonstrate the signature control performance of prototype coatings.

With a focus on Defence impact, you will develop specifications for new coatings and transfer technology to industry partners to facilitate production for Defence clients. You will engage with key Defence stakeholders in acquisition programs as well as platform operations to seek technology insertion opportunities and seek funding for continuing and new Research and Development programs.

You will initiate research programs with national and international partners that will advance Defence capability objectives in relation to future Defence platforms and the enhancement of the signature management performance of the current platforms.

You will be directly responsible for the supervision, mentoring and development of staff within the discipline.

About our Team
The Specialised Coatings Technology subgroup resides in the Specialised Coatings and Corrosion Science Group.

The team strives to reduce the cost of ownership and enhances operational capability of ADF platforms through the development and specification of high performance Defence paint schemes and specialised sovereign signature management coatings.

The Coatings Camouflage and Signatures Discipline focuses on the design, formulation and testing of functional coatings that reduce the detectability, and/or delay the identification, of ADF platforms to visible, NIR, thermal IR and radar sensing systems.

In addition the Discipline undertakes research into coatings that reduce the susceptibility of platforms to offensive laser systems. This is achieved through the development and evaluation of robust functional coatings that can be applied to Aerospace, Land and Maritime platforms.

Our Ideal Candidate
You are a subject matter expert in the formulation and evaluation of robust functional coatings that provide tailored properties in selected areas of the electromagnetic spectrum. You can work effectively across organisational boundaries and are passionate about creating opportunities for staff to develop professionally.

You have excellent interpersonal skills and can articulate a compelling Science and TEchnology (S&T) vision for your team and senior management. You will deliver a capability edge to the ADF through your ability to build and support diverse teams, develop S&T work packages and respond to strategic drivers in Defence.
