The Role
The Defence Aviation Safety Authority (DASA) is responsible for the safety regulation and assurance of all Defence aircraft. We are seeking a senior aviation engineering professional with extensive experience in the design and certification of civil or military aircraft.

Reporting directly to Director General DASA, the successful candidate would lead a team of over 40 experienced engineers and technicians in defining and evaluating the Initial Airworthiness aspects of Defence manned aircraft, unmanned aircraft, aerodromes and shipborne heliports.  In addition, as a senior Executive of the DASA the candidate will help define the DASA’s strategic direction and implement the DASA’s objectives per the Air Force Plan.

About our Team
Working closely with other DASA directorates and the Defence aviation community, the highly professional team that the successful candidate would lead undertakes the following functions in support of Defence aviation safety:

  • prescribes and promotes Initial Airworthiness regulations and design requirements;
  • conducts regulatory oversight of organisations providing design services for Defence aircraft; and
  • guides and assesses proposals for aircraft and aerodrome certification.

Our Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate must be a team player with excellent engineering and communication skills. To be successful in this role you will need:

  • significant experience in civil or military aviation engineering;
  • knowledge of safety risk management, in the context of Australia’s WHS Act 2011;
  • highly developed analytical skills, with the ability to collaborate with engineers, aviation operators and project managers on complex aviation safety problems
  • sound knowledge of aircraft design technologies such as system safety, software assurance, structural integrity, navigation systems, crash protection, and others;
  • sound knowledge of aircraft Type Certification requirements and programs
  • the ability to lead a diverse team of engineering and technical professionals
  • well-developed written and oral communication skills; and
  • excellent leadership, relationship management and team building skills.
