Due to the diverse skills and responsibilities for these roles, applicants are strongly encouraged to look at the individual position descriptions prior to putting together their application. Each position description will describe in more detail the role and subsequently what Defence sees as an ideal candidate for each.

About our Team
The Strategy and Joint Force MSTC is composed of four Science and Technology Capabilities (STC) that support strategic decision-making of Defence’s strategic centre and the Australian Government with respect to emerging technologies. Principal stakeholders for SJF are the VCDF Executive, Strategy, Policy & Industry (SP&I) Group, Defence Intelligence Group (DIG) and the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet. Job vacancies include newly-established positions in recognition of our central role in providing expert technical advice in whole-of-government.

SJF works collaboratively with other MSTC from within JOAD and wider DSTG to provide a comprehensive S&T capability of analytical and design techniques that support strategic decision-making at the highest levels of Defence and certain aspects of Government. It works closely with the STaR Shot Launch Pad to provide analytical design advice and support. SJF enhances its S&T capability through collaboration with universities and other research organisations, and partnership with industry and other government agencies domestically and internationally.

Our Ideal Candidate
These positions require a demonstrated understanding of the factors influencing S&T research and development, and its strategic relevance to the national interest.  A successful candidate will have the ability to: recognise technology opportunities for the long term benefit of Australia – including whole-of-government, Defence and National Security – and use scientific judgment to analyse options, make decisions and prioritise research areas to maximise stakeholder outcomes.

As the ideal candidate you will be able to:

  • Use your specialised knowledge and research experience in a relevant scientific area to generate new knowledge and produce enhanced capabilities for clients and sponsors
  • Build and maintain effective professional networks and relationships with clients and stakeholders across Defence, industry, academia and other research agencies
  • Lead the development of Science & Technology (S&T) initiatives
  • Innovate and problem solve independently
  • Develop strategies to achieve task milestones and organisational outcomes
  • Contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development

Application Closing Date: Thursday 20 May, 2021
