They are involved in the development of hardware from initial concept through to in-service use, and will contribute to design, analysis and testing. Both roles will be required to demonstrate initiative and the capability for innovative thought as applied to design work.

Position Duties:

  • Elicit design requirements from stakeholders, contributing suggestions and constraints from a mechanical perspective.
  • Develop novel mechanical designs in support of Research activities occurring within a broad range of domains including aerospace, maritime and land.
  • Consider Safety in Design during the development and modification of equipment.
  • Identify and apply Australian or relevant Industry standards during the development of designs.
  • Work within and support Research Engineering’s established quality management system.
  • Clearly communicate design & analysis outcomes in both written and verbal forms.
  • Establish and maintain constructive relationships with staff throughout Research Engineering.
  • Apply knowledge of mechanical design principles including material selection, assembly tolerancing, limits and fits, and understanding of fabrication techniques/capabilities. Duties specific to Senior Mechanical Engineer:
  • Provide technical leadership to Design/Engineering tasks having a high level of technical complexity.
