The Role:


Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) is the Australian governments lead organisation for Defence research and innovation with over 2000 researchers undertaking novel, highly advanced R&D for Defence capability. The Shared Services Stakeholder Manager role is guided by the Defence S&T Strategy 2030 - Outstanding Research Infrastructure Powering Innovation Pillar, and aligns with the One Defence Principles.

The Shared Service Stakeholder Manager is accountable for providing authoritive advice and expertise regarding service management of complex and ever evolving service offerings associated with the transition of non-research ICT and Digital Science and Scientific Computing (DSSC) project mandate activities.

This position is key to the linkage between Chief Information Officer Group (CIOG) and DSTG as the Group Point of Contact and the successful candidate will advocate for DSTG and manage the relationship with CIOG as the Defence ICT shared service provider. They will be closely involved in Defence ICT planning and projects (eg Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)) conducted to understand and integrate the related services provided and consumed by DSTG.

The successful candidate will need to understand and advocate the strategic direction of ICT in DSTG, and how Defence shared service ICT services underpins DSTG strategy. The role proactively seeks out and identifies opportunities for industry, government or academia partnerships, and potential sharing of ICT infrastructure and ICT services and creates efficiency through the reduction of duplication with partners in Government, industry and academia.

About our Team:

Research Services Division (RSD) has a workforce of engineers, technicians, computer scientists and other professional staff who deliver a wide range of highly specialised research services and innovative solutions which underpin the operational capability of DSTG. RSD’s work areas undertake a broad, on demand and dynamic array of functions to keep DSTG at the forefront of research and development.

Scientific Computing (SC) branch sits within RSD and forms part of DSSC. It enables and accelerates Defence science and technology research and protects assets in DSTG’s digital research environments. SC does this by provisioning and supporting scientific computing infrastructure that is well-managed, sustainable and scalable; continuing to invest in innovative centralised digital research infrastructure and services, while divesting commodity distributed ICT infrastructure and services; and developing new Scientific Computing practices and technologies.

Shared Service Liaison (SSL) is a Directorate within SC that has responsibilities in the service management, contract management and relationship management areas. SSL has the charter to develop and maintain positive working relationships with senior stakeholders from CIOG and Whole of Government (in the context of secure shared enterprise ICT services), so that DSTG can effectively leverage secure shared enterprise services (and capabilities) and resolve related issues. It additionally oversees the replacement of residual non-research ICT services by suitable external services and redistributes associated resource. This may include managing residual non-research services until they are transitioned to an external provision model and decommissioned.

Our Ideal Candidate:

Our ideal candidate will need to demonstrate that they have:

  • An understanding of Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) Change Management processes along with knowledge about compliance with complex to highly complex internal governance and security.
  • Strong influencing, stakeholder management skills to engage and integrate ICT capabilities.
  • An understanding of and have the capability to design and implement strategies to mitigate the risks associated with service management activities, manage compliance with agreed service levels, including performance aspects, and to be able to lead and/or influence continuous improvement in this space.
  • A highly developed ability to build and sustain relationships with a diverse group of Subject matter Experts and Stakeholders, as well as collaborate with multiple teams and across Defence, industry and academia and other ICT service providers to deliver positive outcomes with respect to provision of quality ICT capability to enhance Defence research.
