The Role

Reporting to the Assistant Director, ADF Suicide Prevention Program, the Lived Experience Program Manager is responsible for supporting the development and implementation of a mental health Lived Experience Framework in Defence.

This role spans strategic and operational outputs and requires stakeholder engagement, relationship management and leadership skills to establish and support a the implementation of Lived Experience Framework and Peer Support approach to Defence’s mental health and suicide prevention policy, programs and service delivery.

An important aspect of the role is to promote the benefits and apply a lived experience approach, to enable Defence to develop and incorporate ways to include Defence members with lived experience of compromised mental health and wellbeing, mental illness and /or suicidal distress within the Defence community. Core tasks include advising and co-designing initiatives, training delivery and evaluation of Defence mental health and suicide prevention activities.

The current position is ongoing however, we will be creating a merit pool to fill similar ongoing and non-ongoing positions that become available within the next 12 months.

As part of Joint Health Command, the Australian Defence Force Centre for Mental Health (ADFCMH) is a national asset which provides leadership, best practice and innovation in military mental health. The ADFCMH’s mission is to enhance Defence capability through engagement, consultancy and an evidence-based, best practice approach to mental health and wellbeing initiatives.

Headquartered in Sydney, with regional teams located across Australia, the ADFCMH team of ADF, APS and contracted staff develops and delivers a robust set of mental health promotion, prevention and early intervention programs; provides consultancy services; delivers training and upskilling programs for the ADF mental health workforce; and implements a range of mental health initiatives, including the ADF Suicide Prevention Program. This position could be located in Sydney or Canberra.

Our Ideal Candidate

The Lived Experience Program Manager is responsible for the strategic development and operational implementation of the Defence Mental Health Lived Experience Framework, a critical element of the Defence Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy (2018-2023).

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience in Lived Experience / Peer Support program delivery at a strategic level
  • Experience in project management of design and delivery of mental health, wellbeing and/or suicide prevention programs
  • A well-developed understanding of military mental health
  • A strong understanding of current research, evidence, practices and whole of Government initiatives in relation to mental health and suicide prevention and the application of a lived experience approach
  • An understanding of, and commitment to, person-centred health approaches that include a lifespan understanding, are trauma informed and recovery focused
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and relationship building skills
  • Strong written communication, public speaking and presentation skills
  • The ability to select and mentor a network of advisors and peers
