Senior ASD Portfolio Opportunities - Several

Senior Executive Service Band 2
Canberra - ACT

ASD defends Australia from global threats and advances the national interest by providing foreign signals intelligence, cyber security and offensive cyber operations as directed by the Government. ASD is a statutory agency within the Defence Portfolio, reporting directly to the Minister for Defence. It operates pursuant to the Intelligence Services Act 2001, which specifies its functions.

We are seeking to fill a range of current and potential future positions at the SES Band 2 level. We are seeking dynamic Senior Executives to drive the organisation forward and deliver against four key activities:

  • providing foreign signals intelligence;
  • providing cyber security services;
  • conducting offensive cyber operations; and
  • sustaining and securing future capabilities.

These activities support ASD’s mission: to defend Australia from global threats and advance our national interests. ASD plays a key role in Australia’s national security. You could be leading activities to counter the threat of terrorism, improve Australia’s cyber resilience and ability to defend against cyber threats, protecting and supporting ADF personnel deployed overseas, or leading a team to enable these activities.

To achieve our objectives, ASD requires people with high levels of integrity and a mix of specialist skills, key among which are adaptability, imagination, and resilience. These are needed to out-think and out-imagine our adversaries and solve seemingly intractable technical and operational challenges. If you want to work with other smart, skilled, and highly motivated people, consider ASD.

You could be leading a division responsible for parts of ASD’s intelligence production, offensive cyber operations, and mission systems development. You will be an exceptional leader for the many linguists, analysts, cyber operators, data scientists, engineers, program managers, and technical specialists in your division. You will work across ASD, the intelligence community, the ADF, wider Government, and with foreign partners in support of ASD’s missions.

You could also be leading ASD’s Cyber Security Services Division within the Australian Cyber Security Centre. You will be key in delivering the vision to help make Australia the most secure place to connect online. You will be responsible for leading the team that provides expert cyber security advice and assistance to all levels of government, Industry as well as the general public. You will bring deep technical understanding, coupled with the ability to engage clearly with all levels of industry and government.  The ACSC is the peak technical cyber security authority for Australia, and you will be responsible for ensuring ACSC is postured to service the wide and varied demands placed upon it.

You could also lead one of ASD’s enabling divisions which undertake capability development and provide ICT services to ASD, the Portfolio and wider Government, or which provide corporate services such as strategy, people services and finance.

As a Division Head (SES Band 2), you will join the Senior Leadership Group and play a key role in leading and influencing a high-performing integrated civilian/military organisation. You will influence the strategic direction of ASD and work with colleagues across the Defence portfolio and Government to achieve results. In these roles you will:

  • lead and manage a Division using inclusive leadership;
  • exercise high-level judgement, and capitalise on innovative alternatives to resolve complex problems;
  • think laterally, effectively challenge the status quo and provide contestability in decision making; and
  • demonstrate resilience and take personal accountability for achieving results.

Successful applicants will exemplify ASD’s values and engender a culture of achievement, collaboration and agility. You will be self-aware, and will encourage and respect the diversity of ideas and perspectives that defines ASD’s workforce.

As part of this selection process, a merit pool will be established and may be used to fill similar positions over the next 12 months.
