The Role

We are looking for a suitably qualified and experienced Engineer to fill the role of Fire Safety & Damage Control Specialist.

At the EL 1 level, you will apply your knowledge and engineering expertise to contribute to the assurance of naval ships and their systems across a wide range of applications. You will be responsible for the development of engineering policies, standards and procedures; including information exchange with international Navies.

Your role will also see you undertake engineering evaluations, tests and trials, whilst also being responsible for the management of technical specialists; educating and mentoring employees across Naval Engineering and maritime communities.

Additional key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Fire Safety (detection, suppression, minimising fuel load)
  • Damage Control Systems (flood control, dewatering, some and toxic hazard containment & removal, shoring/structural reinforcement)
  • CBRND systems/solutions (Chemical Biological, radiological and Nuclear Defence)
  • Overall naval ship ability to recover from damage incident (peacetime or combat)

About our Team

This vacancy is within the Directorate of Navy Engineering (DNE) under the Whole of Ship Centre of Expertise (CoE).

DNE is the primary support group for the Director General Engineering Navy (DGENG-N) in the provision and retention of specialist technical and engineering maritime knowledge, products and services.

DNE brings together a large group of experienced technical and engineering personnel across a wide range of maritime technologies. DNE is responsible for the coordinated Navy Engineering Branch (NEB) inputs to programs and projects and ensuring the NEB is represented on all Naval and Defence matters requiring Navy Engineering expertise throughout all phases of the Defence Capability Life Cycle (CLC).

DNE is customer focused and exists to continuously deliver products and services when required, participate in technical investigations, and highlight significant technology developments. DNE consists of six directorates, which are split into two Centres of Expertise (CoE) Directorates and four directorates that are aligned to the Navy Capability Domains. DNE engages directly with Australian Public Service, Australian Defence Force and Industry engineers.

We are looking for individuals who can demonstrate the following:

  • Hold practical application and experience of engineering/technical judgement through assessing condition of physical assets and design information.
  • Hold strong skills in analysing, synthesising and presenting technical information and data in a clear and concise manner that aids decision making.
  • The ability to coordinate, manage and report on technical activities.
  • Provide technical assurance of equipment, systems and processes.
  • Exercise initiative and judgement.
  • Contribute to a culture of cooperation and sharing of knowledge.
  • Take on a leadership and mentoring role for graduate and junior engineers.
  • Have the ability to prioritise and manage tasks in a demanding environment.
  • Demonstrate capability to influence key stakeholders to achieve strategic outcomes.
  • Have highly developed verbal and written communication skills to logically convey thoughts and ideas.
  • In relation to our vacancy, we are also looking for experts with strong analytical skills in the field of fire safety engineering and related damage control systems, with experience in application of these skills to naval ships;

You may also be required to undertake occasional work interstate and live onboard navy ships at sea remote from land for a few days.
